Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 at Lapage

Welcome to year 1, where every learning day is really fun!
Our classes are 1A, 1B and 1P. We kicked off the half term by finding out all about our class names. We then learnt all about our local heritage and what is special about where we live. The children explored maps, went on a walk around the environment and even looked at old photos of Lapage! We were amazed to find out that our school was built on a big field and the houses on Barkerend Road are still the same!
We have an exciting few weeks coming up, the children will be going on a trip to Eureka as part of their science topic. We will be diving into our core story ‘owl babies.’ In art we will be learning to draw self portraits and in History we will find out about the life of Florence Nightingale.
Over the next few months we will be developing our outdoor area and a brand new sensory provision. Visit back soon for some photo updates!

Hello, My name is Mrs Khan. I started Lapage Primary in 2014. I was a volunteer in a Reception class, as I was studying childcare at college. I was very fortunate to be then employed as a Early years practitioner in the nursery setting. During my time at Lapage I have spent a lot of years working in Early Years, it has been brilliant observing children learning through play. I am currently working in KS1 and enjoying it. I have recently graduated in a BA Hons Education study degree. In my free time I enjoy going to the gym, spending time with my family or to watch a movie.

Trip to Artworks

Year 1 have been to Artworks in Halifax to learn the skill of sandcasting. The artists planned a session based on our core story ‘the magic paintbrush.’ We painted pictures in the sand like Shen. We are looking forward to sharing the final pieces soon!

The Magic Paintbrush

The children in Year 1 have been making predictions on who sent a magic paintbrush to our classroom. Look at the amazing writing!

EUREKA!

As part of our science topic our body, the children in Year 1 went on a trip to Eureka in Halifax. The children took part in a senses workshop where they found out about how our 5 senses work. They explored the museum and learnt about how their bodies works and how to take care of it. We had a wonderful time learning.

Year 1 Classes

Come and look at the Year 1 learning environments!

Hello Yellow Day

As part of Hello Yellow Day, the children in Year 1 have been exploring emotions. We read the story ‘the colour monster’ and thought about all the different feelings we have. The children then painted their own colour monsters to express their feelings and made worry dolls.
Something exciting has been happening in Year 1 at the start of the Summer term. On our first day back we were shocked to find some CCTV footage of a T-Rex walking across our playground! The next day we received a mystery box surrounded by dinosaur footprints!
We are looking forward to investigating what is in this box over the next few weeks.
This half term to children will be going on a trip to Dinostar in Hull to learn all about dinosaurs.
Have a look at some of the photos below of the exciting learning areas we have this half term.

Linking Schools

The children in 1A have been to visit Denholme Primary School as part of their linking schools project. They had a wonderful time meeting the children again and developing new relationships. The children planted sunflower seeds, played parachute team building games and explored the classroom environment.

The Deep

Year 1 have been on a trip to The Deep in Hull this week. There they learnt about different types of habitats as part of their science topic.

An author comes to Lapage

Year 1 were very excited to have the author John Coy visit us today, all the way from America!  He talked the children through his process of writing the book 2 old potatoes and me. The children were in awe and really inspired!
