In the Spring term, we are going to be learning some fascinating information about historic invaders and settlers – the Anglo Saxons and the Vikings. We will explore where they originated as well as why they invaded Britain in 5th century. In Science, we will be learning all about forces. We will be identifying the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces. In art, we will be creating Anglo Saxon monoprints. We can’t wait!
What are we reading? We are currently enjoying Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo – a heroic tale set in 6th century Scandinavia.

Hello. My name is Mrs Heslop. I am currently a teacher in Year 5, and have been teaching at Lapage since 2019. I also have the pleasure of leading ‘assessment’ across Lapage Primary School. My undergraduate degree from Leeds University was in European Union Studies with Law, and I followed this up with a Masters degree in European Politics. After 10 years working in the finance sector, where work was monotonous and unfulfilling, I decided to change careers and follow an ever increasing desire to teach. I completed my PGCE through the Bradford Birth to 19 SCITT programme. This was the best decision I have ever made. I absolutely love teaching and have not looked back since.
I live in Bradford with my husband and two boys, Luke and Joshua. In my spare time I love reading, spending time with my family and going on walks with my boys in our wellies – so we can jump in muddy puddles!

Hello! My name is Miss Rashid and I have recently qualified as a teacher in 2022, and I currently teach year 5. My journey at Lapage started in 2021 as a trainee teacher, part of my placement during my final year at university. My first impression of Lapage was that it is an extremely welcoming and supportive school, which immediately made me feel like this was the school I wanted to work in.
As a teacher, I love providing children with first hand experiences, and allowing them to be active within their own learning. My favourite part of teaching is seeing the smiles on the children’s faces when they have that ‘lightbulb moment’ and understand a concept that they found difficult. In 5W, it is not just about learning- it is a fun, inclusive environment where we share lots of laughter and create memories that the children and myself will cherish!
Outside of school, I love to watch Netflix, spend quality time with family and friends as well as go for drives, especially in the countryside. I also enjoy going on holidays to lots of different countries and experience different cultures and new activities for the first time, such as scuba diving (would not recommend!).
×The children in Year 5 spent a lot of time working hard on their amazing space-themed stories. These stories linked not only to our Science learning but our PSHE curriculum too. Children enjoyed exploring Luna’s life from young girl to inspirational astronaut so much so that they created some really emotive versions of the tale from Dad’s perspective.
The children in Year 5 all went to Bradford Industrial Museum recently. The children all absolutely loved stepping into history through their experiences including: being in a Victorian school-room, exploring the weaving process and seeing Victorian cloth-making machinery in action! The children learned how people previously would prepare wool, spin it to make their yarn and complete hand-weaving. Then, finally, they got to see the industrial machinery in action. It was extremely loud!
At the start of November, our Active Citizenship Project linked with Bradford Cathedral was officially launched in school. Diane Hadwen from the Cathedral brought in some wonderful artefacts linked to the heritage of the Cathedral for the children to enjoy. Also, last year’s Y5 children returned to complete their ‘hand over’ of the project – explaining how the project works and what the project involves. Now we have so many children wanting to be volunteers for our Cathedral Heritage Volunteers project!
